Mekong Build 2009: Cambodia (Part 1)

i have lost touch with the blogging world for quite a while..
but hey! guess what? i am officially BACK!!!!
no more exams to study for the next month at least.. haha..

it has been a week since we returned from Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
The Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project: Mekong Build 2009
was a great experience, a real eye-opener for me!
it was my very first time building homes for the less fortunate.
I believe the same goes to the rest of my team members:
Melissa, Georgiana and Min Tze!
we were youth volunteers representing Malaysia.

we came across this project by chance, many thanks to Melissa!
she's our team leader who was looking for some options for our
up-coming project for Community Service Club in our university!
we only paid for our air tickets and a donation of USD 100 each..
the rest were funded by Habitat For Humanity (HFH) Asia Pacific..
we as students totally hit the jackpot! =)

everything was decided very last minute..
as we only got to know about this build around 2 weeks earlier!
we had to book our tickets within 2 days notice..
met Winnie Wong, National Volunteer Programme Manager..
in the Kepong branch of HFH Malaysia a week before our finals!
she gave us some insight of the previous build..
so that we could at least know what to expect!

my finals ended on Friday afternoon..
we left to Phnom Penh by Air Asia the next day..
the 2.5 hours flight was quick!
i was stuck between 2 men throughout the flight..
no fun cos we don't speak each others' language!

our day 1 [Saturday, 14 Nov] was full of drama!
i arrived late at airport as my dad lost his parking ticket (long story),
too-much-liquid-in-baggage issues at LCCT, delayed flight,
took pictures with random people in the airport,
3 Cambodian Immigration officers checked my bag
and later flirted with me (i am serious),
late check-ins into hotel, dinner-hunting problems,
tuk-tuk and motorcycle accident,
got conned by the friendly tuk-tuk driver and the phone shop..
they sold a supposedly cost USD2 max SIM card to us at USD10!

but look at the bright side..
we arrived safe and sound, staying at a 4-star hotel..
and had the best Amok fish and chicken throughout the entire trip!

upon arrival at Phnom Penh International Airport.
we met Vitey, Sokha and Kyle.

our very first meal in a small, cosy restaurant in Phnom Penh

with Net, our tuk-tuk driver of the night

Day 2 (Sunday, 15 Nov) was a better day!
buffet breakfast at the hotel was awesome.. *yum yum*
I hadn't had such a big breakfast at 7am in a very long time!
since we had some extra time..
we took some pictures right outside our hotel..
which has a breathtaking view of Tonle Sap River!

Mel and Giana with the Tonle Sap River as backdrop

camwhoring shots.. haha

we headed to one of the conference rooms for a talk..
on "Building Leadership for The Future" by Mr Christopher Lee.
most of the youngsters present were local youth volunteers..
about 20 of us were international youth volunteers..
from Malaysia, Indonesia, India and New Zealand!
we had a brief self-introduction before the talk..

at some point of the talk, I am embarrassed to say that
i was trying really hard to stay awake! it was 2 hours long!
as every sentence in English has to be translated to Khmer~
it was like our early morning lectures..
the only difference was no breaks in between! =P

the speaker, Mr Christopher Lee from HEDC

during the talk.. *we are actually posing*

after that, we registered ourselves with the organizers..
and got our registration packages!
it was a Cambodian silk bag with a cap, a scarf, a T-shirt,
a bottle, hand-sanitizer and our week-long itenary in it!
each of us had a small waist pouch with our names on it..
it was really useful later on during the week! =)

all youth volunteers headed to the dumpsite area
where the future homeowners live in 3 buses!
it totally shocked me when i saw the condition of their houses..
wooden planks and rusty zinc roofs.. no proper sanitation..
very small huts with big families living in it!

most of them earn a living by scavaging for
reusable and recyclable items from the dumpsite..
shoes and radios are repaired and being sold in the local market!

we spoke to some of the families with the help of translators..
and took a sneak peek at some of their homes!
they are among thousands of families living in the area..

this couple is among one of the future homeowners

youth volunteers and the kids.. that's Heang Siv!

one of the stalls at the dumpsite area

the interior of one of the houses

a lady repairing shoes.. the hut is as big as it is seen here!

repaired shoes ready for sale

this little girl surprised me when she hugged me out of no where!
her family will move to their new home..
but she'll remain here with her sister to complete her studies!

outside some of the houses

kids play around barefooted in these areas

next stop was the dumpsite..
which was just a short walking distance away!
the stench was unbearable as we go nearer to the entrance..
but surprisingly it was okay when we were in it..
either we got used to the smell or it simply disappeared!
This area is usually closed to public..
but we were given a 10 minute access for a visit!

as we enter, we were greeted by these sights

youth volunteers walking in the dumpsite

the school was just situated in the dumpsite

these kids were picking up cardboards..
and asking us for our empty water bottles!
the piles behind are plastic bags for recycling.

all that I saw with my own eyes and tales I have heard that day,
really sent a message to me.,
how thankful I am for what I have!
how much most of us have been taking things for granted..
the kids here are just pinning for a better life away from this area..
a proper education is like a luxury to them!

this where we had our USD2.50 buffet lunch..

local youth volunteers said it was a typical Khmer meal..
but unfortunately they were not my liking so i only had a little..

we wanted to visit the palace but it was closed!
the same happened the day we left~ =(

instead, we went to the Russian Market on a tuk-tuk for shopping!

we bought souvenirs and clothes..
as we know we won't have time during the rest of the week!

later that night, we were dressed up for the Wecoming Dinner!
it took us less than an hour to get ourselves clean and ready..
surprisingly, with our Malaysian timing..
we were still earlier than the rest.. say WHAT?!

Giana, Mel, myself and Min Tze in Malaysian traditional outfits

with some of the youth volunteers

John and i in our Indian / Punjabi costumes..

it was a really grand set-up.. probably up to 40 tables?

with my new friends, Maria and Chhay in their Cambodian outfits.

Min Tze and i with Mr Maradi who has polio since birth..
he appeared in the video for Mekong Build 2009 in Cambodia!

with the beatiful Apsara, the angel of Cambodia!

with the Kiwis who were wearing their All Blacks shirts:
Kelsi, Helene and Ryan

part of the one big happy family! =)

the plans for more future homes

stay tuned for more on this exciting journey.. =)
p/s: photos contributed by Giana, Mel and myself..

anyway, this is old news but i haven't tell you yet..
SEE YOU IN SEM 3!!! XD

the happy and memorable moments for your 2009 journey~ ^^

your chinese improved and you look extremely hot in there~

your 3rd Japanese single Only You released on 18 March 2009..
i don't understand it though.. haha.. but it sounds cool~

then on 28 March 2009, you had your first concert in Malaysia..
i was there of cos, the second concert i have been in my entire life!
refresh your memories by reading the post..

the concert was a blast and it even appeared on the news!
i was jealous, so were the other die-hard Chillies (Chun's fans)
when you held that fan girl's hand during the concert..
you were the only one who held hands throughout the song,
bringing her around the stage and letting her sing..
how i wish i had that chance too! =P

you look adorable and blending into the stage backdrop..
singing my favourite cute song Little VIP/ 小小大人物.. =)

and you showed your macho-ness while playing the Taiko drums..
i remember screaming at the top of my lungs then.. *swoons*

your baby - Fitness Zone, opened it's second branch in Brunei..
i told my friends before that i will only join any gym
if you open a branch in KL, or better still in Petaling Jaya!
this is you giving your speech during the opening ceremony~

how can anyone not love you?
although you are celebrity, you are pretty down to earth..
taking your time to interact and take picture with your fans,
accepting their gifts and posting them up on your blog,
giving encouragement and advices as usual.. lovely!

i'll bug my friends from Brunei to take me for a visit..
i shall take picture with your cars and the number plates..
the stunning Ferrari B88 and the sporty Subaru BV1010..
hopefully can meet you too! =P

mini update!

hey people! sorry for the lack of updates..

i am facing major exam stress right now..
it'll be starting on Tuesday and consecutively every 2 weeks!
it's like so many things to cover, so little time given~
and we are having lots of unrelated to exam stuff to do..
i just don't get why they can't wait till after the exams?
or may be extend the semester? this semester is only 12 weeks..

we have like 5 assignments to complete in the span of one month..
2 written assignments, 1 video, 1 presentation and 1 report!
not to forget private and government dental clinic visits,
dental laboratory visit and a forum by invited speakers..
all of this a week before exams and during exam week.. T___T

oh, i resat for my CPR practical exam yesterday..
apparently i failed 1 scenario which is for the unconscious child..
and the best part is i don't remember doing anything wrong last time!
so woke up at 7.15am, left at 8am, drove 25km to uni..
to do a practical which took me around 3 minutes to do and complete..
i arrived home at 12.30pm, so tired and i slept after that..
now i really want to pass it or i'll be speechless!!!

nway, most of you must be wondering why i privatised my blog..
nothing much actually, something triggered it.. hehe..
might consider publicizing it again in the near future..
just in case my Chun drops by.. haha.. *whacked*

just to share with you my top most viewed posts of all time..
the top 3 especially has 3-digits daily hits.. =)
and that's before i privatised this blog of mine.. hehe..

3) Trip to Bukit Gambang Resort City, Kuantan
4) My Poor Left Hand
5) It's About Time.. =P

birthday update

very quick update here.. it's my birthday today! =)

the pump attendent at the petrol station flirted with me..
i was shocked! like seriously no joke~
it's something difficult to digest so early in the morning!

the speeches from my friends were terrifying~
i know i look mature for my age..
and they just had to emphasize on that! sigh..
but it's ok.. not that i haven't heard of it ever before..
at least i'll still look as young when i am older.. =P
thank you anyway, i appreciate that!

i had 1/2 the auditorium singing birthday song for me..
a bit malu la but it was a nice feeling~ hehe..
i heard different versions of the song after that..
my IMU friends are a bunch of talented people.. that's for sure!

played bowling with the girls.. i sucked big time but it was fun~

it was just play, play, play today.. hehe..
only classes till noon without revising anything!
i had Wellness Appraisal till around 5.30pm..
which further confirmed how unfit i am.. *shakes head*
the test should have been done when i was practicing badminton!

i was stuck in the jam for 2 freaking hours with Mae Yee..
we had a good laugh, talk and man-hunting session alright!
thank god she was there with me.. *winks*

anyway, thanks a bunch to well-wishers out there~
from sms to calls, blogs to facebook and face-to-face encounters!
thanks for making today a memorable day..

not forgetting the presents and cards.. *hugs*

it's MY day, they said.. =)

my 2nd week of September~

this week i was less busy, as in less classes to attend..
but i am fully loaded with assignments..
two is down, another two more to go! must finish by mid-week ok~

there were some pretty interesting stuff this week..
some of you may already know, Phoenix got 4th place in badminton..
we tried to kick some ass, but didn't make it..
oh well~ there's always next year to nail it.. hehe..
we can start training after EOS 2 and BDS 1!
btw, a girl from the winning team dislocated her elbow in the finals!

this week's Make A Difference (M.A.D.) events were pretty happening..
it's like an IMU Arts Festival were students participate in events like
photography, drawing, dance, music, speech, video-making etc..

have a look of the winning team from dance category, Masquerade..
one of them is Ai Ling, who taught us fan dance back in SMKBU!
they have pretty cool dance moves alright.. enjoy~

next is Music Appreciation.. no competition, just entertainment!
i think from our batch there were 2 teams:
Melissa's group and Carcinoma (yes, you saw it correctly)..
but i am gonna show you a clip of one of my OOs singing..
enjoy the 6 in 1 song by Kyan and Daniel!

now in another note, Bite and Impression Registration session!
this is our second time doing so.. and pictures as promised.. hehe..

we have to take the impression on each other using alginate..
Suet Yen is the operator, Eka is the patient and i am the assistant!

this is the leftover of the alginate mix..

how is it done? we added water into the powder..
stir quickly and steadily it until it's creamy and soft..
it changes colour from purple to pink then white as in hardens..

then we need to remove the impression from the mouth..
compare it with the teeth, wash and disinfect it.. no pictures for this!
and head down to the dental lab to make the mould..

most of us ended up with alginate all over our mouth like Pei Jie.. =P

the dental lab was pretty chaotic at that time.. lol..

Kai Shang attempting to pour the stone mix into the tray..

the vibrator is there to get rid of bubbles in the first layer..

end up with something like my maxillary and mandibular stones!

Sam placing some powder for plaster mix into the rubber bowl..
appropriate amount of water and powder is needed for all our mixes!

after that we'll put a lump of plaster mix on the tile..
invert the tray and place the dried stone mix on the top..

as the stone is settled down, remove the tray from the models..
this step requires patience, strength and determination.. hehe..

and it's time to trim and polish the models like Chong Dee..

please keep your fingers and teeth model away from the machine..
a safe distance at least, like what Je Haw is doing..

after everything is done, we pose and smile with our models! =)

ok, this is last of the triology of this blog post..
make sure you have already eaten alright.. don't say i didn't warn ya~

090909 was my parents' anniversary..
so we headed to Bavarian Bierhaus in The Curve for dinner..
it was my very first time trying out German food!

the menu cover.. thank god my dad was paying the bill.. =P

the ambience was not bad.. just a little too dark for my liking..
and there was no air-cond for that matter.. only fans leh~

they had really nice decorations on the walls though..

i ordered 6 in 1 Pentathlon Pace smoothie *yum yum*, consist of:
plain yogurt, peach fruit, ice-cream, apple, honey and orange juice!

my drink tasted better than my brothers'..
they had sour ice-blended Peach and Raspberry respectively.. hehe..
no beers for our family despite the on-going Happy Hour!

we had Sausage Platter.. 6 types of sausages grilled to perfection!

Crispy Roast Pork Knuckles with a freaking knife stuck at the top..

Barbeque Baby Pork Rib.. this is lovely! i want moreee~

and finally Gordon Blue.. it's stuffed with cheese and ham inside!

that's all for now.. i have a lotttt to revise.. wish me luck! =)

hello people!

i am back! =D

sorry for not updating in a while.. i was pretty occupied lately!

and no, i was not part of ME209 orientation..

i shall wait till Semester 3 to be an OO (Orientation Officer)!
yes, mark my words.. i'll make it through EOS 2!!!

i think i have problems with my time management.. =(
i spent a lot of time doing unnecessary stuff, non-academic related..
so i have like another 3 weeks of lecture to catch up on!
this did not happen in Sem1, why is it now?

but i believe everything will get back to normal staring Monday..
feel free to lash out on me if anyone sees me lazing around!
Joo Yong did a good job the other day..
i was taking my so-called "power nap" in the library..
and then she woke up instantly by shouting my name! =P

------------------------------End of Part 1----------------------------

now is the continuation of the last 2 weeks.. very brief one, i hope!

Chin Ning came down to KL the day of the IPTS debate..
since he brought us round Penang last holiday,
we promised him to eat duck rice when he is in KL..
so Mel and i took him and his girlfriend for a dinner at Long Foong!

freaking long queue for the duck wei~
non-stop chopping of ducks from the start of our dinner at 6pm
till we finish walking around the pasar malam around 8 something!

our dinner that night.. for FOUR people!

and i asked a stupid question resulting in roaring laughter..
but i knew the answers alright: ONE duck has ONLY TWO legs!!!

that week we had CPR Theory Exam, which i passed! ^^
people who didn't had to pay for the resit ok~

oh, on the first day puasa..
we were at Sheraton Imperial Hotel to break fast.. joking!
cousin CC's birthday that's why.. but we were the first to arrive..
not a good time to have buffet though..
cos it's not my favourite kind of food variety!

cousin CC bought a lot of party accessories for her guests..
from con-shaped party hats, guns and police cap for the boys,
to hairband and wand set for the girls, and annoying whistles!

Daniel blowing off the candle for his mummy..

cousin Syuen and my bro posing with some of the accessories~

up next is about another OHC session.. we did some cool stuff!
we took each others bite impressions, you know, moulding teeth?
no pictures though.. i will take some photos next time around!

then it was Boh's birthday on August 28th..
the entire batch was singing him a birthday song..
around 270 of us in the lecture theatre! just imagine~
it was seriously the first time hearing it so loud and clear..
cos usually not everyone sings..
and it is somebody's birthday every other day.. haha..

i took this picture with Tay's DSLR.. =D

Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO) performance
in Sunway Convention Center on 29 Aug 2009 was lovely!
we went there to watch Chin Ning perform..

and guess who we met there? Jiexun, Ying Tian and family!
apparently they are good friends with each other..
and Ying Tian's sister was the concert mistress.. cool right?

me, Joo Yong and Shi Wen before the performance..
this was a successful 3rd attempt by me! pro right? =)

have fun with the following video..
ignore the guy's head, he was blocking my view half the time..
watching live was better though! hehe..

some of the 105 MPYO members and their funny conductor..

i had badminton match the next day, was part of women's doubles!
Phoenix won 7 out of 10 games.. i lost both, damn sad case..
but we will do well in the Semi-Finals and Finals tomorrow evening..
Phoenix just got to win that gold medal alright! =)

with some of the Phoenix badminton team for IMU Cup!

last but not least.. a picture of me and Chiew Yi on Merdeka Day!

not that we celebrated Merdeka or anything..
just that this seriously is our first picture together!
since like forever? yes indeed!
